When Uncle Arthur is falsely accused and banished for dabbling in dark magic, shy, pragmatic 13-year-old Gris attempts to clear his uncle’s name and uncovers disturbing secrets about his own identity that make him question everything he’d always thought to be true. As he realizes that nothing in Arcadia is as it seems, and the Elders he had once thought of as infallible have failed to keep out an encroaching discordant evil, Gris must break free from the security of life as he knows it and go on a quest to figure out who is responsible, and how to preserve Arcadia as the sanctuary of hope and harmony it was created to be.
In a land where the sky tells secrets, and even the air is not to be trusted, a desperate wizard’s archaic prophesy is Gris’s only guide. He and his friends leave the cozy cottages of Velvet Acres to embark on a harrowing adventure full of missteps, misfortune, and scrappy perseverance in the face of an enigmatic enemy. From Chance Heights, where they are rescued by a wise Buddhist llama named Dolly, to The Fairy Tale Forest, a land of pure imagination where they seek Tommy the misunderstood troll’s missing mother, their journey is filled with choices that challenge them to venture into the realm of the impossible. Along the way, they encounter magical creatures, talking animals, and unlikely figures from fantasy, folklore, classic books, and mythology who teach them lessons about themselves they will never forget.
Gris once dreamt of getting a chance to do something more important than sitting behind his school desk, but with the stakes this high, can he trust his own voice enough to keep Arcadia from plunging into the disruptive darkness it has worked so hard to avoid?
